Abnormally excessive sweating is called hyperhidrosis or polyhidrosis. Sweating might not be related to heat or exercise and can affect just one area or the entire body. The symptoms begin during adolescence and if left untreated, may continue lifelong. The feet, hands, face, groin, and armpits are the most commonly affected parts. This condition can be caused due to some underlying health condition or can be idiopathic (no apparent cause). Some of the health condition that can cause excessive sweating are obesity, gout, menopause, tumor, mercury poisoning, diabetes, and hyperthyroidism. The treatment options are iontophoresis (painless electric current is passed in a bowl of water where the hands and feet are submerged), Botox injections, anticholinergic drugs, and endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (the nerve that carries messages to the sweat glands are cut).
