Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Beta-lactamase is secreted by bacteria, which prevents the action of Penicillin. Clavulanic acid, when given along Penicillin, blocks the action of beta-lactamase secreted by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
