Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing hair loss, and trying to understand the potential causes. Can you provide insights into the differences between pattern hair loss and alopecia areata? Additionally, what are the common symptoms and recommended treatments for each condition, and are there any lifestyle changes or preventive measures I can consider to address hair loss? Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through the details provided from your end and I do understand your concern.

Hair loss or hair fall can be due to multiple reasons which include:

1. Androgenic alopecia: There is male or female pattern hair loss where the hair recedes backward and loss of hair may be noticed on the crown area as well. This is mostly due to genetic susceptibility from the maternal end where any family members have a history of hair loss. Due to hormonal fluctuations in the body. Aggravated by location changes, diet changes, vitamin deficiencies, improper hair washing, using hair styling and hair coloring products, and so on. Androgenic alopecia may be managed with medications like Minoxidil (Alcohol and Propylene glycol) solutions, gels, Minoxidil and Finasteride combination solutions, Anaboom (Hydrolyzed Keratin and Propylene glycol) anti-hair fall serum, anti-hair fall shampoos, Redensyl (Glycine and Zinc chloride) serum, and so on. Procedures using one's plasma like PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or GFC (growth factor concentrate) injections may be taken on the scalp once a month which helps in releasing growth factors on the scalp. If the hair pores are closed, then as a last resort, hair transplant procedures are done where grafts depending on the

2. Alopecia areata: This is a condition of the scalp where there is loss of hair in round patches. They may affect any hair-bearing areas like the scalp, beard, mustache, eyebrow, and so on. They are an autoimmune condition where our hair cells are mistakenly attacked by our antibodies causing patchy loss. There is no permanent cure for the same but may be managed with injections like corticosteroid injections taken on affected areas once a month for 4 months and augmented by using minoxidil gels and tacrolimus ointment on the scalp which helps in reducing the inflammation and immune production in those areas. Alopecia areata may appear on and off whenever there is stress, fever, sleeplessness, diet or location changes, and so on.

3. Telogen effluvium: This is a type of hair fall or hair loss where the hair cycle gets arrested in a particular stage due to multiple reasons like stress, viral infections like chicken pox, COVID-19 infection, and also due to dengue cancers, location changes, and so on. Here, with the right stimulation with once-a-week oil massage, GFC, PRP, Minoxidil, Redensyl hair serum, and multivitamins, hair growth can be stimulated. In certain stages, micro-needling treatments where a small needle containing pen is used for stimulation of the scalp. If untreated, they may become chronic.

4. Other causes include, vitamin D3 and B12 deficiencies, iron deficiencies, zinc deficiency, dandruff, stress, sleeplessness using hair styling products, frequent hair straightening or curling treatments, frequent hair coloring treatments, fungal infection on the scalp, any chronic diseases, thyroid diseases, and PCOD (polycystic ovarian disorder).

Finding the underlying cause and getting treated with medications for the underlying condition will help stimulate hair growth. Preventive measures and lifestyle changes include the following:

1. Having enough protein-rich food like sprouted moong dal, lentils, soya chunks, egg whites, and quinoa would help.

2. Making sure to use oil including coconut oil, castor or rosemary oil and vitamin E oil in combination for a once-a-week scalp massage may be done.

3. Making sure to keep the scalp clean with a hair cleanser and avoiding helmets frequently would help.

4. Using tap filters for soft water and making sure to avoid chlorine water by catching water on the previous night of hair wash will help.

5. Avoid styling products, colors, and hair creams will help prevent hair loss.

6. Having multivitamins including biotin gummies is also helpful.

7. Maintenance GFC or PRP may also be done on the scalp to keep hair density intact.

8. Early treatment when hair loss is initially noticeable will help correct it faster.

Kindly consult a specialist, talk to them, and take the medications with their consent.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
