Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have noticed changes in my sleep patterns as I age, and I am concerned about the link between sleep, aging, and dementia. Can you provide insights into how aging affects sleep and whether there is a connection to dementia? Additionally, I have heard about melatonin as a sleep aid – is it a safe option for older adults, and are there other sleep medicine considerations for my age group? I want to ensure I am promoting healthy sleep habits as I get older. Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Our need to sleep decreases with aging. For example, if a teenager needs up to eight to ten hours of sleep per night, this need gradually decreases to six by age 70. Unfortunately, you did not describe your sleep problem, therefore, I cannot judge if your problem could be attributed to your age or not. In response to your question about sleep and dementia, the answer is yes. There is evidence that sleep deprivation increases the risk of dementia notably. Melatonin is a safe supplement that is helpful in the adjustment of sleep onset and maintenance. Moreover, it is beneficial to try sleep hygiene procedures that include:

1. Make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, relaxing, and at a comfortable temperature.

2. Remove electronic devices, such as TVs, computers, and smartphones, from the bedroom.

3. Avoid large meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime.

4. Keep a consistent sleep schedule.

I hope you find this information helpful.

Thank you.
